A Drug-Free Workplace provides many benefits to the employer, the employee and their coworkers.
Companies often require drug tests under the following conditions:
Pre-employment Tests (confirm employment offer only after a negative drug test result)
Reason: Increases the chance of hiring someone who is not currently using illegal drugs.
Before a promotion (test employees prior to promotion within your company)
Reason: Increases the chance of promoting someone who is not currently using illegal drugs.
At time of annual physical (test employees as part of their annual physical)
Reason: Identify current drug users within your company.
Random Tests (testing a selected group of employees at random and unpredictable times)
Reason: Discourages drug use. Unpredictable testing is the most effective way of identifying current drug users within your company.
Reasonable Suspicion Tests (test employees who show obvious signs of drug or alcohol abuse)
Reason: Promotes the safety of the employee, coworkers and the work environment, and gives the company the opportunity of rehabilitation if the employee tests positive.
Post Accident Tests (testing employees who are involved in an accident to determine whether alcohol or drug use was a factor)
Reason: Statistics indicate that drug users have a much higher than normal rate of accidents.
Promotes the safety of the employee, coworkers and the work environment, and gives the company the opportunity of rehabilitation if the employee tests positive
Followup Tests (randomly testing employees who return to work after participating in an alcohol or drug rehabilitation program)
Reason: Encourages and ensures that employees remain drug-free after completion of the first stages of treatment.
Workers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol:
- Have increased accidents; are 3.6 times more likely to injure themselves or another person in a workplace accident.
- Are 5 times more likely to be injured in an accident off the job.
- Have increased medical claims; are 5 times more likely to file a worker's compensation claim.
- Have increased absenteeism; are 2.5 times more likely to have absences of eight days or more.
-
Produce increased product defects; have more difficulty concentrating and recalling instructions.
